Direct from the desk of Dane Williams.

If you’re looking for an alternative to Sunflower Farmers on Polygon, try dCrops built on Hive.

Sunflower Farmers launched on the Polygon network at the end of December 2021, eventually bringing the entire network to a standstill due to how fast it attracted users (and bots) to the game.

The problem with this is that the Polygon blockchain, supposedly built as a layer-2 scaling solution to the same problems found on Ethereum, couldn’t handle the load.

This meant that a single Farmville style game caused gas fees on Polygon to go through the roof and essentially brought the blockchain to a standstill.

Obviously, this is not ideal for anyone using the Polygon blockchain, thus forcing creators of Sunflower Farmers to shut it down.

While the plan is to eventually re-launch Sunflower Farmers as a metaverse called Sunflower Land, there are Sunflower Farmers alternatives available to play now.

In this blog, we go over the backstory and encourage virtual farm enthusiasts to take a look at the best game like Sunflower Farmers - dCrops on Hive.

Sunflower Farmers literally crashed Polygon

The Sunflower Farmers play-to-earn game took the entire blockchain industry by storm after its release.

It’s popularity is shown by the fact that at one point in time, it even outranked Splinterlands as the number 1 play-to-earn game on DappRader.

Unfortunately due to the game being situated on the Polygon (MATIC) blockchain, it just couldn’t handle the load and everything quickly turned sour.

As a layer-2 scaling solution to the problems facing Ethereum, the Polygon network prided itself in its ability to handle network congestion while retaining relatively low gas fees.

However, as users began to pile into the game, the network became congested and the network simply could not cope.

A lot of users on the Polygon network are there in order to bypass the high gas fees from Ethereum.

But Sunflower Farmers made the limits of the Polygon network quite obvious.

You see, in Sunflower Farmers, players earned SFF tokens from performing tasks like planting and harvesting crops.

This encouraged scarcity of the token and the need for players to keep building and earning as new players kept trooping into the game.

Sunflower Farmers rewarded users every 3 days, based on the size of the farm and acquired properties by each user.

As the number of players increased, the game became congested and as transactions for gameplay were delayed, not to mention the increase in gas fees.

In order to stay ahead in the game, players who wanted a higher share of the token had to pay higher gas fees.

And ultimately the price of gas required to earn the game’s token was higher than the value of the tokens themselves.

Game over for Sunflower Farmers and alternatives needed to be found.

Sunflower Farmer game alternative - dCrops on Hive

The problems that the network faced with Sunflower Farmers shows that Polygon is not going to be the solution to Ethereum’s scalability problem, let alone allow for play-to-earn gamers to freely play.

Polygon was simply unable to scale under the pressure of a single dApp.

Now compare that to the Hive blockchain’s performance under the duress of hosting the number 1 play-to-earn game in Splinterlands.

With blockchain performance in mind, the best Sunflower Farmer game alternative is dCrops on Hive.

Dcrops is a farming simulation game where players purchase crops and land, individually or in packs, and plant them within their 15 day seasons.

The game works like actual farming as there are 4 seasons:

  1. Spring
  2. Summer
  3. Fall
  4. Winter

Before the end of each season, players harvest their crops and sell them in exchange for the native CROP token.
